The San Onofre Foundation, whose mission is to support education and interpretive efforts at San Clemente and San Onofre State Beaches, is sponsoring:

· at San Clemente State Beach Campground, Campfire Center and Butterfly Trail

This event is sponsored by San Onofre Foundation in partnership with California State Parks. Additional grant support is provided by The National Environmental Education Foundation and the San Clemente Garden Club. Participants are encouraged to enjoy a picnic at the park – bring your lunch and learn about the importance of Butterflies in your community.

The schedule of events for the day includes Butterflies of Orange County & Insights from Peter J. Bryant, Ph.D., The Natural History of Orange County. The day will also include:

· Planting Milkweed on the Butterfly Trail

· Butterfly Tent with live butterflies

· Live exhibits, native plants, and pollinator crafts

· Tours of the Historic Cottage and Guided Trail Hikes

· Free face painting and popcorn

· Special event parking is $5.00 for the day

The San Onofre Foundation (SOF) is a California non-profit, charitable corporation, whose mission is to provide education, protection, and preservation for the California State Parks at San Onofre and San Clemente State Beaches. BOARD ELECTS BARRY BERG PRESIDENT

San Onofre Foundation elects Barry Berg President,
adds Dave Ethington to Board of Directors

February 8, 2013 San Clemente, California

The San Onofre Foundation, whose mission is to support education and interpretive efforts at San Clemente and San Onofre State Beaches, is honored to announce the selection of Barry Berg as new President of the Board of Directors, Rebecca Robles as returning Secretary and Dave Ethington as First Executive Delegate. They began their new two year terms of office following Board of Director Elections held last month. Paul Strauch continues as Vice President along with Dan Lineback as Treasurer, and Kathleen Cobb as Second Executive Delegate. Steve Netherby assumes the post of Past President. Bob Mignogna, Dave Gerhard and Steve Long serve as Senior Advisors, and Susan Goggins is the organization's Business Manager.

Barry has always appreciated growing up in the San Clemente area where his family first moved to in 1934. The local coastline has played an on-going major role in his life, from learning to surf as a young boy at San Onofre, to influencing his art work and the basis for a thirty plus year career in the surf media. It has been through these very meaningful experiences that Barry has gained the deepest respect for the riches of our local natural environments. Barry has served on the San Onofre Foundation Board of Directors since 2009. And as the longest serving member of the Board, is committed and passionate to the Foundation’s mission of educating, preserving and protecting the rich cultural and natural history of this magnificent coastal zone.

Newly elected board member, Dave Ethington, grew up in San Clemente and has raised his family to appreciate the unique outdoor experiences afforded by our state parks. He and his family are recognized community leaders involved in environmental education and outreach through the garden club and as volunteers helping to raise awareness and stewardship of Butterfly Trail at San Clemente State Beach.

Ethington looks forward to combining his professional project management skills with his passion for the surfing and nature to assist the San Onofre Foundation in its efforts to preserve park lands while increasing the opportunities for people to share and learn from their beauty.

Steve Long, retired park superintendent and SOF Founder, expressed his deepest appreciation to this team of leaders who have stepped forward to assure that the broad community of park stakeholders and visitors will always have a voice in the future of these World Treasures. "San Onofre remains threatened with its lease expiring in a little over eight years, and a toll road expecting to capitalize on that expiring lease to force a restructuring of the parklands. We must remain vigilant and vocal, demanding rational, contemporary, intellectual dialog regarding the future of our parks. Our children and all future generations are relying on this generation to make the hard decisions and do that which is right, including personal sacrifice, that they might inherit a recovering planet that continues to celebrate the miracles of life."
